Are AI mockups allowed on Etsy?
Etsy's October 22, 2026 rules don't ban mockups for digital downloads. Digital listings are among the exceptions to the new unedited-photo rule: Etsy asks for a preview of what buyers receive, and every image must show the item accurately.

A digital print listing that fits the rules
Etsy's general rule is that images must reflect the item's “color, condition, scale, and materials.” For a printable, three kinds of image cover that:
A preview of the file
The artwork itself, flat, or a close crop that shows the detail. This is the “preview or excerpt” Etsy asks digital downloads to include.
Room mockups
Your artwork on a wall, so buyers can picture it at home. Keep the colours and content true to the file you deliver.
The sizes included
A size chart or a clear list. Etsy names scale among the things images must reflect; our reading is that a chart covers it when one file prints from A5 to A1.

Check a listing in five minutes
- One image shows the artwork file itself, flat or as a close crop.
- The mockups show the same colours and content as the file.
- The sizes included are clear, in a chart or in the description.
- If the artwork was made with AI, the listing says so.
- A person, not a script, created and published the listing.
What changed on October 22, 2026
Etsy announced the update in Important updates to AI use on Etsy. Five changes matter to sellers:

One unedited photo for most items
Most listings now need a photo of the actual item that hasn't been edited in any way. Digital downloads and the other product types in the table have their own rules.

Every image must be accurate
No hiding flaws or making the item look different from what the buyer receives. Adjusting light, cropping or changing the background is still allowed on your other images.

AI-generated patterns, recipes and instructions are out
Functional guides can no longer be AI-generated. AI art stays allowed when you play a clear creative role and are transparent about it.

No bot-made listings
Etsy: “Bot-generated listings without any human involvement aren’t allowed.” Our reading: using AI to help write a listing you review and publish yourself is a different thing.

Tips when AI images are detected
Etsy says it is adding tips to the listing form when it detects AI-generated images, to help you represent the item accurately.
When you need to disclose AI
Required when the item itself is made with AI. Etsy: “Sellers must still disclose when an item is created using AI and cannot misrepresent AI-generated work as handmade or entirely their own creation.” Say it in the listing description; our tip is to also set “How it's made” in the listing form. Recommended, not required when AI was used to edit listing photos. Etsy suggests noting it in the description. A short line at the end works, for example: “Room images are mockups to show the print on a wall; frame not included.”
Titles, tags and descriptions written with AI
The update doesn't ban AI-written listing text, and Etsy offers its own optional AI tool that suggests titles. What it bans is listings made by a bot without any human involvement. Read what AI writes, fix it, and publish the listing yourself.
What Etsy hasn't said yet
- How much human input is enough. Etsy bans listings “without any human involvement” but doesn't say how much involvement is enough.
- How its AI-image check treats mockups. Etsy describes tips in the listing form, but nothing specific about mockups.
- Whether buyers will see AI labels. Etsy says it will “explore more ways to give buyers helpful context about when AI has been used” in the coming months.
- A deadline for old listings. Listings that don't meet the new rules need updating, but Etsy gives no date.
